How to Calculate Percentage from Marks

The formula is one line:

Percentage = (Marks obtained ÷ Total marks) × 100

Scored 54 out of 70 on a paper? That's 54 ÷ 70 × 100 = 77.1%.

For several subjects or papers, add up everything you scored, add up the total marks available across all of them, then apply the same formula once.

One thing to watch, if your papers carry different weightings, a straight totals approach is not quite right. University modules often count differently towards your final result, in which case a weighted average is what you need.

What Your Percentage Means in the UK

A raw percentage on its own does not tell you your grade. What it maps to depends on the level you are studying at.

GCSEs: Grades run from 9 to 1 and are set by grade boundaries, which exam boards like AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC publish after each exam series. The boundaries move year to year depending on how hard paper was, so 65% might be a grade 7 one year and a grade 6 next. Use your percentage to gauge performance against past boundaries, not as a guaranteed grade.

A Levels: Same principle. Grades A* to E are set by boundaries that shift each series. As a rough historical pattern an A has often sat somewhere around 80% and a C around 60%, but only published boundaries for your specific exam board, subject and year are reliable.

University: Here percentages map directly to classification bands and these are consistent across UK universities:

The standard pass mark for undergraduate modules is 40%, rising to 50% at postgraduate level at most institutions. A mark of 70%+ at university is genuinely hard to achieve, which is why UK percentages look low compared to grading systems elsewhere.

Working Backwards: Marks Needed for a Target Percentage

Flip the formula to plan revision priorities:

Marks needed = Target percentage × Total marks ÷ 100

Need 60% on a paper marked out of 120? You need 0.6 × 120 = 72 marks. Knowing the raw number you are chasing makes past paper practice far more focused than aiming at an abstract percentage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Averaging percentages from papers of different sizes: A 90% on a 20 mark quiz and 50% on a 100 mark exam does not average to 70%. Total the marks first: 60 out of 120 is 50%, and that's your true position.
Ignoring weightings: If coursework is worth 40% of a module and the exam 60%, apply those weights rather than treating both marks equally.
Treating a percentage as a grade: At GCSE and A Level, boundaries decide the grade, not the raw percentage.
