FAQs

When does SMP start?

SMP can start from 11 weeks before your baby's due date. It starts automatically if you're off sick with a pregnancy-related illness in the 4 weeks before your due date.

Do I have to return to work to keep SMP?

No. You are entitled to SMP regardless of whether you return to work. However, if your employer offers enhanced pay, they may ask you to repay it if you don't return.

What is Average Weekly Earnings (AWE)?

AWE is calculated using your pay in the 8 weeks (or 2 months) before the 'qualifying week' — the 15th week before your due date.

What if I'm not eligible for SMP?

You may be eligible for Maternity Allowance (up to £184.03/week for 39 weeks), paid directly by the government. Contact your local Jobcentre Plus.
