What Is BTU?
BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. It is simply a measure of heat output. The higher the BTU, the more heat a radiator produces.
Every room loses heat at a different rate depending on its size, insulation, windows and position in the house. Your BTU calculation matches the radiator's output to your room's heat loss, so the room reaches and holds a comfortable temperature without overworking your boiler.
1 watt = 3.41 BTU. All radiator outputs in the UK are measured at Delta T50 (ΔT50), the industry standard that assumes a flow temperature of 75°C, return of 65°C and room temperature of 20°C.
What Affects Your BTU Requirement?
Several things change how much heat a room needs.
Room size is the starting point. A larger room needs more BTU to heat the same air volume.
Windows are the biggest source of heat loss. Single glazed windows lose significantly more heat than double or triple glazed. The larger the window area, the higher your BTU requirement.
External walls lose heat faster than internal walls. A corner room with two outside walls needs more BTU than a room surrounded by other heated rooms.
Wall construction matters too. Solid brick walls lose heat faster than modern insulated cavity walls.
What is above and below also plays a role. A room above a cold garage or below an uninsulated roof needs more BTU than one sandwiched between two heated rooms.
Room type makes a difference. Kitchens and hallways typically need higher BTU outputs because doors open and close more often, letting cold air in.
Typical BTU Requirements by Room
These are typical ranges for UK homes with double glazing and standard insulation:

Can You Split BTU Across Multiple Radiators?
Yes and it is often the better choice for larger rooms. If your living room needs 8,000 BTU, you can use two 4,000 BTU radiators rather than one large unit. This gives you better heat distribution across the whole room and more flexibility with where each radiator sits on the wall.
Just make sure the combined BTU of all radiators in the room meets or slightly exceeds your calculated requirement.
BTU for Heat Pumps and Low Temperature Systems
This is a section most BTU calculator pages ignore, but it matters more and more as heat pumps become common in UK homes.
Standard radiators are rated at ΔT50 for traditional gas boilers. Heat pumps run at lower flow temperatures, typically 35°C to 45°C rather than 75°C. At these lower temperatures, a radiator produces significantly less heat than its ΔT50 rating suggests.
If you are installing radiators for a heat pump system, you will need to upsize your BTU requirement considerably, often by 50% or more. A heating engineer should specify your exact requirement based on the flow temperature your heat pump operates at.
A Note on Delta T Ratings
When you shop for radiators online, always check which Delta T rating the BTU is quoted at. Reputable UK suppliers use ΔT50, the British standard per BS EN 442. Some suppliers quote at ΔT60 or ΔT70, which inflates the output figure.
A radiator listed at 1,000 BTU at ΔT60 only produces around 791 BTU at the real-world ΔT50 standard. Always compare like for like at ΔT50 to avoid buying a radiator that leaves your room cold.
Practical Tips Once You Have Your BTU
Round up, not down: If your calculation comes in at 6,200 BTU, choose a 6,500 or 7,000 BTU radiator rather than a 6,000 one. A little extra capacity never hurts.
Add thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs): TRVs let you control each radiator individually. This stops rooms from overheating and reduces your overall energy use.
Position radiators well: The most effective spot is usually under a window on an external wall. This counteracts the cold draught coming off the glass and distributes heat evenly around the room.
