North Node Calculator

Enter your birth details to find your north node sign, degree and house along with your south node which always sits directly opposite. In astrology the north node is read as your direction of growth, often called your life path or destiny point.

What Is the North Node?

The lunar nodes are not planets. They are two points where moon's orbit around Earth crosses the ecliptic, the sun's apparent path. The ascending crossing is north node and descending one is south node, always exactly opposite each other in the chart.

In astrological tradition the pair form an axis of growth. South node is read as your comfort zone, habits, skills and patterns that come easily, sometimes framed as past life gifts. The north node is stretch, qualities and experiences you are here to grow into, which often feel unfamiliar at first and rewarding over time. Astrologers commonly treat it as the single most purposeful point in the chart.

True Node or Mean Node: Why Calculators Disagree

If two websites have given you slightly different node positions, this is why. The moon's orbit wobbles, so the node's actual position oscillates. Astrologers handle that in two ways:

  • Mean node: a smoothed average position, ignoring the wobble.
  • True node: the astronomically exact position at your moment of birth.

The two rarely differ by more than a degree or two, but near a sign boundary that can be enough to change your node sign between calculators. Most modern astrologers and most software default to the true node. Whichever you use, consistency matters more than choice itself and our calculator states which it applies.

Do You Need Your Exact Birth Time?

For the north node, less than for almost any other chart point, with one big exception.

The nodes move slowly, changing sign roughly every 18 months as they travel backwards through zodiac on an 18.6 year cycle. So unless you were born within a day or two of a sign changeover, your birth date alone usually pins down your node sign.

The exception is house placement, which depends on your ascendant and shifts every couple of hours. Astrologers consider house at least as revealing as the sign, since two people with a Leo north node in the 10th and 4th houses are read completely differently. So enter your birth time if you have it and if you only know the date, treat the sign as reliable and the house as unknown.

North Node Signs at a Glance

Because nodes spend around 18 months per sign, everyone born in the same window shares a node sign, which is why the house makes it personal. The sign themes astrologers work with:

North Node & South Node Axis Themes

The south node column is a reminder that each growth direction has a matching comfort zone to loosen, not abandon.

Reading the Nodes Together

Astrologers stress that nodal axis works as a pair. Leaning entirely on south node strengths is associated with feeling stuck. Chasing north node while rejecting the south is read as unsustainable. The traditional guidance is integration, keeping gifts of the south node as a foundation while consciously building north node qualities.

Transits and eclipses along the nodal axis are treated as activation periods, which is why eclipse seasons get so much attention in astrological writing. Eclipses always occur near the nodes.

A Note on Interpretation

The north node is a rich symbolic tool, not a fixed verdict on your life. Astrology is a reflective tradition rather than a predictive science and the node reads best alongside your full chart. Use it as a prompt for thinking about growth, not a script.
