How to Convert Percentage to CGPA

The standard method used by most boards and universities is simple. Divide your percentage by 9.5.

CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5

So if you scored 76% overall, your CGPA on a 10 point scale is 76 ÷ 9.5 = 8.0. This is the CBSE formula and it has become the default conversion across most institutions that grade on a 10 point scale.

For other scales maths changes slightly:

4 point scale: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 25. A score of 76% becomes 3.04, which is the format American universities and many global job portals expect.
5 point scale: CGPA = Percentage ÷ 20. The same 76% becomes 3.8.

Why the Divisor Is 9.5 and Not 10

This trips people up constantly. The 9.5 factor comes from CBSE, which analysed the average marks of students in the top grade band and found they clustered around 95% rather than 100%. Dividing by 9.5 rather than 10 reflects how marks are actually distributed, so a student with 95% correctly lands on a perfect 10 CGPA.

Some universities do use a straight divide by 10, and a few use their own formulas entirely. Anna University and VTU in India are well known examples with custom conversion rules. If conversion is for an official document, check which formula your institution recognises before you submit anything.

Converting for UK University Applications

If you studied under a percentage system and are applying to a UK university, you will usually not need to convert to CGPA at all. UK admissions teams assess international qualifications directly and most publish country specific entry requirements stating the percentage or CGPA they expect.

What helps is knowing roughly where your marks sit against UK degree classifications, since UK entry requirements are often written in those terms:

Treat this as a rough guide only. UK marking is stricter than percentage systems in many countries, so a 70% UK mark does not carry same weight as 70% elsewhere. Universities know this and apply their own equivalency tables. When a UK postgraduate course asks for a 2:1 equivalent, university's international pages will state the exact CGPA or percentage they accept from your country and that figure is the one that counts.

When Not to Self Convert

A converted figure is fine for your own reference, a CV or an online form with no official option. It is not fine when:

The university asks for original transcripts. Send your marks exactly as issued and let their admissions team convert.
A credential evaluation is required. Services like UK ENIC (formerly NARIC) or WES produce official equivalency statements that institutions accept. Your own calculation carries no formal weight.
Your institution publishes its own conversion formula. That formula overrides standard 9.5 method on any official paperwork.
