Method 1: Simple Average (Equal Credits)

CGPA = Sum of all SGPAs ÷ Number of semesters

SGPAs of 7.2, 7.8, 8.0 and 7.5 across four equal semesters give (7.2 + 7.8 + 8.0 + 7.5) ÷ 4 = 7.62.

Method 2: Credit Weighted Average (Different Credits)

When semesters carry different credit loads, the correct formula weights each SGPA by its credits:

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Semester credits) ÷ Total credits

This is the method university regulations mandate and it is how your institution computes CGPA on your transcript. A 24 credit semester influences your CGPA more than an 18 credit one, exactly as it should.

Worked Example

The simple average of those four SGPAs would give 7.75. Small difference here, but when cut offs are strict a few hundredths can decide eligibility, which is why the weighted method is the one to trust.

Mistakes That Skew Your CGPA

• Rounding too early: Keep full decimals until the final step. Rounding 8.48 to 8.5 before multiplying compounds the error across semesters.
• Averaging when credits differ: The single most common error. If your semesters are not identical in credit load, the simple average is wrong.
• Dropping failed subjects: A fail typically scores zero grade points but credits still count in your attempted total, dragging the CGPA down. Some universities replace grade on a retake, others average both attempts. Check your institution's rule before excluding anything.
• Forgetting a semester: CGPA covers every completed semester, not just the recent ones you remember fondly.

Using Your CGPA for UK Applications

If you are applying to a UK Master's course, admissions teams will assess your CGPA against their own country specific equivalency tables. As a broad pattern, UK universities asking for a 2:1 equivalent typically expect a CGPA somewhere in 6.5 to 7.5 range on a 10 point scale and First class equivalents usually sit around 7.5 to 8.0 or higher.
