How Much Does Tree Removal Cost in the UK?
Tree removal in the UK costs between £150 and £3,500 for most jobs in 2026. Most homeowners pay around £500 to £1,200 for a standard residential tree. The final price depends on five factors: tree height, species, site access, whether a Tree Preservation Order applies, and what happens to the wood and stump afterwards.
Here is a straightforward price guide by tree size:
Tree Height
Typical Cost Range
Time on Site
Small (up to 5m)
£150 – £400
Half day
Medium (5–10m)
£400 – £900
1 day
Large (10–15m)
£900 – £1,800
1–2 days
Very large (15–20m)
£1,800 – £3,000
2–3 days
Extra large (20m+)
£3,000 – £5,000+
3–5 days
These figures assume reasonable site access and a standard daytime job. Stump grinding, restricted access, emergency callouts or TPO consent fees are all additional and are covered separately below.
What Drives the Cost of Tree Removal
Tree height and spread are the primary cost drivers because they dictate how many sections an arborist must dismantle, how long the job takes and what equipment is required. A tree surgeon working above 20 metres needs a Mobile Elevated Work Platform or advanced climbing rig, both of which carry a daily hire cost that goes straight into your quote.
Species and wood density matter too. Hardwoods such as oak and beech are heavier and take significantly longer to process per section than softwoods like pine or birch. A hardwood at 10 metres can be a more demanding job than a softwood at 15 metres.
Site access has the single biggest impact on whether a quote is at the low or high end of its range. A tree in an open front garden with driveway access is a very different proposition to the same tree wedged between two Victorian terraces with no vehicle access and overhead cables nearby. Crane hire for confined or tall trees adds £500 to £1,500 or more, particularly in London and the South East where road permits and parking restrictions compound complexity.
Disposal method affects the final bill. Many arborists include chipping green waste on site in their quote. Taking all timber and debris away costs more, typically £90 to £500 in garden waste removal charges. Keeping logs on site as firewood is a practical way to reduce the total cost and many arborists will leave them at no extra charge.
Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is almost always quoted separately from tree removal and is frequently omitted from headline prices. Always confirm whether stump grinding is included before agreeing to any quote.
| Stump Diameter | Stump Grinding Cost (2026) |
|---|---|
| Under 20cm | £60 – £100 |
| 20–40cm | £100 – £200 |
| 40–60cm | £200 – £300 |
| Over 60cm | £300 – £550 |
| Stumps in confined spaces requiring hand-held grinders cost more due to reduced efficiency. Full stump excavation including root removal and void filling is a separate groundworks job costing £200 to £900 depending on root depth and spread. |
Leaving a stump untreated is not always a safe option. Untreated stumps can harbour honey fungus, which spreads to surrounding plants and borders. Remaining roots continue to lift patios, pathways and driveways for years. Most landscapers and turf layers will not work over an unground stump.
Tree Preservation Orders and Conservation Areas
This is the most important check before inviting any quotes. Removing or carrying out significant work on a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence.
Tree Preservation Order (TPO): A TPO is placed on individual trees or groups by the local planning authority to protect them. Removing a TPO tree without written consent carries a fine of up to £20,000 in a Magistrates' Court or unlimited penalties if prosecuted in Crown Court, plus a legal duty to replant. TPO consent applications typically cost £200 to £500 in local authority fees and take several weeks to process.
Conservation area: If your property is in a conservation area, you must give the local authority six weeks' written notice before removing any tree with a trunk diameter of 75mm or more (measured 1.5m from the ground). The council can apply a TPO during this period if they wish to protect the tree. Work can proceed after six weeks if no objection is raised.
Protected wildlife: If the tree hosts bats, nesting birds, or rare lichens, you may need an ecological survey (£300 to £800) and can only work outside the bird nesting season, which runs March to August.
Check TPO status by contacting your local council or searching their online planning portal before inviting quotes. Any arborist who does not ask about TPO status before pricing is a red flag.
Additional Costs to Factor In
Emergency callout: Storm damage and fallen trees requiring immediate removal cost 25 to 50 percent more than scheduled work. Emergency services maintain consistent pricing year-round regardless of season.
Traffic management: Trees near a public road may require temporary traffic management, adding £300 to £800 to the job depending on duration and road type.
Arboricultural report: If the tree is close to a building on clay soil, a professional arboricultural survey (£150 to £400) is worth commissioning before removal. This assesses structural risk, confirms TPO status, and documents the condition of the tree, useful if a neighbour or insurer later questions the decision.
Replanting condition: If you are granted TPO consent or conservation area approval to remove a protected tree, the council may impose a replanting condition requiring a replacement tree to be planted at your cost.
Tree Removal vs Crown Reduction
Tree removal is not always the right solution. A qualified arborist may well recommend crown reduction or pruning as a safer, cheaper and more environmentally appropriate alternative.
Crown reduction reduces the height and spread of the tree while maintaining its form and root stability. It costs £420 to £600 for a small to medium tree and £750 to £1,080 for a larger specimen. Where a tree is causing shade, encroaching on a building or creating storm risk, crown reduction often addresses the problem at roughly half the cost of full removal.
Well-placed mature trees can enhance UK property values by 15 to 20 percent according to RICS research, with London properties seeing increases of up to 25 percent in some cases. Removing an established tree, particularly a protected one, can reduce rather than increase your property's value if it is a significant landscape feature.
How to Save Money on Tree Removal
Book in winter. November to February is the cheapest period for tree removal. Deciduous trees have no foliage, reducing debris volume and labour time by up to 30 percent compared to summer. Arborists have greater availability and some offer free stump grinding or free log stacking during quieter months, with potential savings of 10 to 20 percent on standard rates.
Group multiple trees into one visit. Mobilisation costs are significant. Having two or three trees dealt with in a single visit is meaningfully cheaper than separate bookings.
Accept chippings as mulch. Many arborists will leave chipped green waste on site at no extra charge. This eliminates waste disposal fees and gives you excellent free mulch for borders.
Keep logs for firewood. Asking the arborist to leave cut timber rather than haul it away reduces disposal costs and gives you usable firewood.
Get three written quotes. Prices for the same tree can vary considerably between contractors. Always obtain at least three quotes from Arboricultural Association Approved Contractors and confirm each quote is itemised to show felling, stump grinding and disposal separately.
