How the Average Calculator Works

Enter your values and calculator adds them up and divides by how many there are. That gives arithmetic mean, which is what most people mean when they say average. Alongside it you get median, mode, range and the count, because a single number rarely tells whole story of a data set.

For the set 8, 12, 9, 7, 13, 10 the sum is 59 and there are 6 values, so the mean is 59 ÷ 6 = 9.83.

Mean, Median and Mode Explained

All three are measures of central tendency and each answers a slightly different question.

Mean is sum of all values divided by the count. It uses every number in the set, which makes it powerful but also sensitive to extreme values.

Median is middle value once numbers are sorted in ascending order. With an odd count it is the central number. With an even count it is the mean of the two middle numbers, so the median of 2, 4, 6, 8 is 5.

Mode is value that appears most often. A set can have one mode, several modes or none at all when every value appears once. The mode is the only average that also works for non numerical data like favourite colours in a survey.

Range is difference between the largest and smallest values and shows how spread out the data is.

When the Mean Misleads You

The mean has a weakness worth knowing about, outliers drag it around. Take salaries 22,000, 24,000, 26,000 and 150,000. The mean is £55,500, yet three of four people earn under half that. The median of £25,000 describes the typical person far better.

This is why house prices, incomes and anything with a skewed distribution are usually reported as medians. As a rule of thumb use mean for balanced data and the median when a few extreme values could distort the picture. If mean sits well above the median your data is skewed to the right, and if it sits below the data is skewed to the left.

Weighted Averages Are Different

A plain mean treats every value equally, but sometimes values carry different importance. If coursework counts for 40 percent of a grade and exam for 60 percent, averaging two marks equally gives the wrong answer. That calls for a weighted average where each value is multiplied by its weight before summing. Our Weighted Average Calculator handles those cases.

Working It Out by Hand

For GCSE maths or a quick sanity check the manual steps are:

  • Mean: add every value, divide by the count
  • Median: sort the values, pick the middle one, or average the middle two for an even count
  • Mode: tally how often each value appears and pick most frequent
  • Range: subtract the smallest value from the largest

For the set 3, 19, 9, 7, 27, 4, 8, 15, 3, 11 the sum is 106 across 10 values so mean is 10.6, the sorted middle pair is 8 and 9 giving a median of 8.5, the mode is 3 and the range is 27 - 3 = 24.
