Density is the measure of how much 'stuff' is packed into a certain space. For example, lead has a higher density than feathers.

How the Density Calculator Works

Enter any two of three values and calculator finds the third:

  • Density = mass ÷ volume
  • Mass = density x volume
  • Volume = mass ÷ density
The standard symbol form is ρ = m ÷ V, where ρ is Greek letter rho. Enter mass in kilograms or grams and volume in cubic metres, cubic centimetres or litres and calculator handles unit conversions, which is where most manual mistakes happen.

Getting the Units Right

Density is quoted in two common units and conversion between them trips up more students than formula itself. Water sits at 1,000 kg/m³, which is exactly 1 g/cm³, so converting from g/cm³ to kg/m³ means multiplying by 1,000. The list below explains floating at a glance: anything less dense than water floats in it, anything denser sinks. Ice at 917 kg/m³ floats with roughly nine tenths of its volume below the surface, which is the iceberg fact in numbers.

Measuring Density in Practice

Finding a density experimentally is a GCSE required practical and method splits by shape of object. For a regular solid, measure the mass on a balance and calculate volume from dimensions measured with a ruler or vernier callipers. For an irregular solid, measure mass, then find volume by displacement, lower object into a eureka can or measuring cylinder of water and volume of water displaced equals volume of object. For liquids, weigh an empty measuring cylinder, add a known volume, weigh again and divide mass difference by volume. The biggest sources of error in all three methods are reading water level from wrong angle rather than at eye level to meniscus and unit slips between cm³ and m³.

Worked Example

A metal block measures 5cm x 4cm x 2cm and has a mass of 312g. Is it aluminium?

  • Volume: 5 x 4 x 2 = 40 cm³
  • Density: 312 ÷ 40 = 7.8 g/cm³, which is 7,800 kg/m³
Aluminium is 2,700 kg/m³, so no. The value matches steel almost exactly. This is practical power of density, it identifies materials without damaging them, which is exactly how Archimedes was said to have tested the golden crown.

Density Beyond the Classroom

The same calculation runs through real decisions constantly. Builders convert between volume and weight for ordering and transport, since a cubic metre of sand weighs around 1.6 tonnes and misjudging it overloads a van. Shipping companies price by volumetric weight because a lorry fills up before it weighs out when carrying low density goods. And relative density explains layering everywhere, from oil floating on water to hot air rising, because less dense fluids sit above denser ones.
