EV Charging Costs UK 2026

Where and when you charge makes a bigger difference to your running costs than the car itself. Here is what UK EV drivers pay in 2026:

The Ofgem energy price cap sets the standard home electricity rate at 24.67p per kWh from April 2026. Dedicated off-peak EV tariffs, such as Octopus Intelligent Go, bring this as low as 6.7p to 9p per kWh during overnight charging hours (typically 11pm to 6am). The difference between these two extremes is the single most important lever you have over your EV running costs.

Home Charging : The Cheapest Way to Power Your EV

An estimated 80% of electric car charging takes place at home. And for good reason: home charging on an off-peak EV tariff is between seven and ten times cheaper per kWh than using a public rapid charger.

Standard rate home charging at the Ofgem April 2026 cap of 24.67p/kWh: a full 60kWh battery costs approximately £14.80 and costs around 7p per mile for an average-efficiency EV.

Off-peak EV tariff home charging at 7p to 9p/kWh: the same full charge costs £4 to £5 and drops to roughly 2p to 3p per mile. Over a year of typical UK driving (8,000 miles), the difference between a standard tariff and an off-peak EV tariff adds up to over £500 in savings from home charging alone.

A dedicated home wallbox (7kW) costs around £800 to £1,200 installed and charges a typical EV overnight in 8 to 9 hours. The EV Chargepoint Grant for flats and rental properties is still available, offering up to £350 toward installation; the grant for homeowners ends in 2022.

Public Charging Costs

Public charging is significantly more expensive than home charging, but serves a different purpose: top-ups while out and about, destination charging and en-route rapid charging on longer journeys.

The weighted average pay-as-you-go price to charge on the public network in May 2026 was 54p/kWh on standard and fast chargers (3kW to 49kW) and 79p/kWh on rapid and ultra-rapid chargers (50kW and above).

Standard and fast chargers (3–49kW) are found at supermarkets, car parks and destination locations. At 54p/kWh average, these cost around 16p per mile. Many are free, Tesco Pod Point chargers, for example, offer free charging while you shop.

Rapid and ultra-rapid chargers (50kW–350kW+) are the motorway and en-route charging option. At an average of 79p/kWh, a 10% to 80% charge on a typical 64.8kWh battery costs approximately £40 and delivers around 168 miles of range. Specific network pricing in 2026:

Many networks offer cheaper rates with a membership or subscription. If you regularly use a particular network, a monthly plan often reduces per-kWh costs meaningfully below the PAYG price.

Cost Per Mile : EV vs Petrol in 2026

The most useful comparison is not the cost of a full charge, but the cost per mile:

For a driver doing 8,000 miles per year mostly on home charging, the saving over an equivalent petrol car is roughly £960 to £1,600 annually. A mixed-charging driver who splits between home and public rapids still saves around £290 per year compared to petrol. The crossover point where public rapid charging exceeds petrol cost per mile is real, if you rely entirely on motorway rapids at 89p/kWh or above, you are broadly paying the same as filling with petrol.

How Battery Size Affects Your Charging Cost

The larger your battery, the more energy (and cost) a full charge requires, but also the more range you get. Here is a quick reference for common UK EV models:

Most drivers rarely charge from 0% to 100% in one session, particularly on rapid chargers, where charging to 80% is recommended to protect battery health and maximise charge rate. The real-world cost is usually 60% to 70% of the full charge figures above.

How to Reduce Your EV Charging Costs

Switch to a dedicated EV tariff: This is the single most impactful step. Off-peak tariffs like Octopus Intelligent Go or OVO Charge Anytime bring home charging as low as 6.7p/kWh overnight, a saving of over 70% compared to the standard Ofgem rate. With household electricity rising 13% from July 2026, off-peak EV tariffs are now even more valuable.

Charge at home first, use public chargers as backup: At 7p/kWh at home versus 79p/kWh on a public rapid, home charging for daily use and reserving public charging for long trips is the strategy that saves hundreds per year.

Compare rapid charger networks before you stop: The spread between the cheapest (Tesla open Superchargers at ~62p/kWh) and the most expensive (BP Pulse at ~92p/kWh) on the same motorway journey is significant. Apps like Zap-Map show live pricing and availability before you arrive.

Seek out free chargers: Tesco Pod Point, some workplace chargers, and many hotels and leisure centres still offer free or subsidised charging. Free chargers may not always be fast, but for routine top-ups while you are already parked, they are worth planning around.

Consider solar panels: A 4kWp home solar system generates approximately 3,400 to 4,000 kWh per year, more than enough to cover the 2,500 to 3,500 kWh an average EV needs annually. Once the system has paid back its installation cost, your effective charging rate approaches zero per mile.
